Week 6 Term 1 2008

This week we wriggled into the classroom pretending to be worms making tunnels in the soil. It was great fun. We wrote from a worm’s perspective some of the things we did and liked. Grace shared with us that she’d made worms when she was at kindergarten – she showed us what to do and we all made one and painted it.
These are on display in our room.

At the end of last week Jordan walked into the classroom and found a ladybug on her hand. This got us thinking – Josie wanted to know how many spots a ladybug had – Charlotte wanted to know how long they lived for. This week we have found information about ladybugs and have presented the information on a class y chart. We have also begun to make pet rock ladybugs.

Our lovely snail art work is finished and on display in our room. We did two one colourful to which we let our creative talents go wild and the other we used the good old teabag in water in attempt to get them to look like the snail we had sketched.

Every Friday morning from 9:30- 11:00 we get together with the rest of the Kowhai team to take part in a range of activities. The children are able to move to any of the classrooms to take part in an activity that interests them. Below are some photos of the range of things the children in our class made.

Week 5 Term1 2008

This week we read a book called my worm house and looked at this website where we met vermi the worm. We then set about making our very own worm farm – it was a lot of fun with even some of us brave enough to pick up a wriggly squiggly worm. we put the worms on the top of the worm farm and watched them disappear down into the soil.

Having read bubbles last week we have become fascinated with hedgehogs and have found out a lot of facts about them. We used these facts to write an information report.

We shared what we’d learnt about the worm farm with room 2 and showed them how to make one.

We changed the story of my worm house to ‘Our worm house’ by room 3 Here is the story for you to enjoy

Week 4 Term 1 2008

This week we started our inquiry on discovering our backyard. We listed all of the things we could think of that we’d find in our garden – we could think of lots.

Later in the week we headed out to butterfly creek – an opportunity to up close to not only butterflies but a range of animals. We had a lot of fun and some butterflies even landed on us.

As we close for the year we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and thank- you for sharing in our learning.

Week 10 Term 4

We have watched with interest as some of the flowers have begun to change colour – in particular the carnations which had red and yellow food colouring have changed the most. There was great excitement when a circle of colour was spied around the sun, of course we then all had to go and have a look being very carefully not to look directly into the sun.

Our final assembly was a great successful. We looked stunning in our colourful head gear and we sang about water and colours.

Week 9 Term 4

We are busy getting ready for the end of year assembly next week.

Logan found a great experiment for us to do in a science book from home. This week we have set up the experiment- adding food colouring to the water we have placed the carnations into. We will watch with interest to see what happens.

Week 8 Term 4

A world without colour was the topic of this week’s discussion. After reading the book what can I see which is illustrated in only black and white we drew black and white pictures similar to those drawn in the book. However this time we decided which animals we would draw and hide amongst the scene. Marie spent a lot of time on hers and it is quite spectacular (see below)

On Thursday we dressed in only black, white and grey and no coloured jovis were allowed to be used all day! We painted pictures with black, white and grey paint and wrote poems about ‘night time ‘.

When it was time to go home we weren’t too sure if we’d like to have to wear black, white and grey everyday but one thing was for certain we had had a fun filled and interesting day.
